Okemos High School Band 24th Annual Car Wash-A-Thon is Sept. 21

Dear Okemos High School Band Parents,

Our 24th Annual Band Car Wash-A-Thon takes place on September 21, 2013 (note the new date)! This major fundraiser has proven to be very successful. Over the years, the Car Wash-A-Thon has provided over $90,000 for equipment, band activities, trip expenses, and funds for student accounts. We will need your help to make the 2013 Car Wash-A-Thon our best fundraiser ever!

Pre-Season Drills begin August 11

Pre-Season Drills begin at 4:00 pm Sunday August 11 and end Tuesday, August 20 at 8:00 pm for all band members, including freshmen, new members and veterans. These essential rehearsals are required of all band members. In addition to polishing fundamental musical and marching skills, and learning our pre-game and half-time shows, the band learns to perform as a group, and we get to know each other as people and as musicians. Our schedule includes nearly 40 hours of rehearsal over 9 days. This is equivalent to 9 weeks of school-day rehearsal. This is fewer hours than many other bands, so we must be prepared and efficient to learn our material.

Spring Concert May 16

Our final concert of the school year will feature the Freshman Band, Concert Band, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble.  Guest soloists are Jessica Bauer, Kate Swasey, and Mitchell Jacobs.  Our guest conductor is recent MSU graduate and intern teacher Michael Clemente.

We hope that you will invite your friends and family to attend!

A reminder to Freshman and Sophomore parents:  please bring 2 dozen brownies or cookies or a fruit tray to the commons before the concert.

We are looking forward to a great evening and a wonderful send off to the class of 2013!

Collage Concert March 16

Okemos High School Auditorium — 8 pm

This unique concert–presented free of charge–features our finest high school performers as well as community guest artists.  What makes this concert unlike others is that each ensemble or soloist presents only one short piece, followed immediately by the next contrasting piece, with no break or applause. With this non-stop format, thirty different ensembles and soloists are all presented in an hour and a half plus intermission. This includes all of our bands, orchestras, choirs, a number from the spring musical, and a number of chamber ensembles and soloists. The contrasts of styles and sounds make this concert distinctive.  Everyone is invited to enjoy the best of Okemos!

Winter Concert December 20

Our final concert of 2012 will take place this Thursday, December 20, at 7:30 pm.  Students are to report at 7 pm in full concert attire.  The Jazz Band, Freshman Band, Concert Band, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble will all perform.

Following the concert, you are invited to the Commons for a reception honoring our performers.  Parents of juniors and seniors are asked to bring cookies, brownies or a fruit tray (freshman & sophomore families handle the Spring concert reception refreshments).

We look forward to celebrating the season with you!

This is a Pot Luck dinner so PLEASE BRING a dish to pass. Bring your own table settings (plates and utensils) and dish to serve 12 – 15 (with a serving utensil) according to your Band Student’s last name:

A – D bring a Dessert and 2 liters pop

E – R bring a Main Dish

S – Z bring a Veggie Dish and 2 liters pop

Band Car Wash-A-Thon is Sept. 15

The success of this project depends upon every band member obtaining 20 pledges (or more!!) Now is the time for band members to begin signing up pledges. We’ve put over $50,000 of Car Wash-A-Thon money toward replacing worn-out instruments and providing clinicians for the band.

The first $90 of each student’s fundraising for this school year is designated to the band general fund, and the rest goes into the student’s individual trip account.
